Frankly we landed here by mistake. Looked ok and service was good but while there was plenty of it the food was heavy and fried. Not at all like the cafe lunches we had been experiencing along our travels. Was a handy stopping point but a diner none the less.
Fred's is a bit of a local institution. Well known for it's Fried Clams, which are incredible, it has a large menu with something for everyone. Eat in, take out, sit inside, sit outside, lots of options. Warning, the large clams are large. But you can reheat them at home...mmmm
Lobster roll was delicious. The deep fried cod was very good. The fries were standard fare. Service was good as was atmosphere.
Nothing tasted fresh. The food tasted frozen and the lobster roll was literally a little bit of lobster, a hot dog bun and some mayo. I will not ever eat there again.
Clearly a favorite among the locals but possibly the worst piece of fried fish I've ever had. With fish and chips at a restaurant like this I expected an in house tartar sauce. This was not the case. I was given kraft tartar sauce which I have now learned tastes awful. Paired with the overly thick piece of fish that didn't taste very fresh it was not a pleasant experience.Fries were ok.
